How common are drunk driving car accidents?

Drunk driving is a serious problem in every state of the country. It is a particularly bad problem in Texas, where more than 13,000 people perished in alcohol-related vehicle accidents between 2003 and 2012. The Centers for Disease Control have published disturbing facts about drinking and driving in the Lonestar state and this post will offer some of the data propounded by their research.

Rates of death for all age and gender demographics in drunk driving accidents in Texas are greater than the national averages for the rest of the United States. For example, while the national average of male deaths per 100,000 is 5.2, the Texas average is 7.6. The rate of death for women in Texas is slightly closer to the national average than the rate of death for men, with 2.4 Texas women dying in drunk driving crashes per 100,000 compared to 1.5 women nationally perishing per 100,000 in similar accidents.

Young adults in Texas lose their lives in drunk driving accidents considerably more frequently than young adults throughout the nation. In the 21 to 34-year-old age category, 10 out of every 100,000 Texans dies from drunk driving collisions, while in the same age breakdown nationally, only 6.7 young people per 100,000 die from a similar cause.

This very brief review of drunk driving accident statistics should demonstrate to readers of this blog that drinking and driving is a significant problem for residents of Texas. Many San Antonio residents have been directly affected by drunk drivers or know someone who has suffered a loss at the hands of an intoxicated motorist. Drunk drivers can be held liable for the losses they cause to their victims.
