Cell phones can function as dashboard cameras

The ability for people to stay connected and respond quickly at any time of the day has arguably become an indispensible part of everyday life. Automakers have responded by making access to cell phones easier while driving under the guise of making it safer. However, distracted driving is a persistent issue. The National Safety Council estimates that one in four accidents on American roads is caused by distracted driving.

Despite this, cell phones can be used to help provide useful insight by showing how some accidents may occur by being used as a dashboard camera.

A recent article produced on highlighted a number of apps and mounting packages that enable smartphones to be used as dash cams. Like cameras mounted on law enforcement vehicles, cell phone dash cams can provide much needed video evidence to show how an accident really occurred.

Having access to such footage could help resolve disputes over the cause of an accident. It could give investigators a view of what the driver saw in the moments leading up to the crash, as well as proof of whether a driver was using reasonable care while behind the wheel. In some cases, it could prove a driver’s innocence if they are accused of being negligent.

More importantly, it could help an injured party remember what happened in the accident. After such a traumatic experience, some people may not be able to recall specific details that could be vital to their case.

Whether these apps will become popular enough to be on everyone’s phone remains to be seen. But if you have questions about your rights and options after an accident,  an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you.
